6 Wharf

Napier Port has built a new wharf to support growth for our customers and our economy.

Te Whiti Wharf (or 6 Wharf) future-proofs our port, allowing us to handle more and larger ships, as well as enhance operational performance.

In the ten years from FY2010 – FY2019* we experienced solid growth in container volumes and bulk cargo exports. We also saw growth in the number of cruise ships visiting our shores. We needed to build 6 Wharf to support this growth.

50% more containers

94% more cruise ships

64% more bulk cargo

HEB Construction started building the wharf in early 2020

We appointed a main contractor, HEB Construction, to build the multi-purpose wharf. HEB started construction during the first quarter of 2020 (calendar year). Read more about our construction and dredging programme.

Building sustainably and in partnership

We were dedicated to ensuring the project was the best it could be for our economy, community and environment.

Our work was guided by best practice management plans and we worked in partnership with stakeholders,  including mana whenua and the fisheries community,  to protect cultural, recreational and environmental values.
