Napier Port is the gateway for goods flowing in and out of Central New Zealand and is at the heart of the Hawke’s Bay economy. We are driven to find better answers for our importers and exporters by leveraging technology, innovation, and the capability of our people.

As a Mooring and Pilot launch boat Deckhand, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient transfer of pilots to and from vessels, as well as assisting in the mooring operations of ships docking at our port. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, teamwork, and the ability to work in a dynamic environment.

Key priorities of the role are: 

  • Assist in mooring operations for incoming and outgoing vessels. 
  • Assist onboard the pilot boat to safely transfer pilots to and from ships under the direction of the Launchmaster.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the pilot boat and mooring areas.
  • Ensure all safety protocols and procedures are followed diligently.
  • Participate in training sessions and safety drills as required.

What we are seeking

  • Previous experience in a maritime environment is preferred but not necessary.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A practical understanding of safety standards and protocols.

Availability for flexible hours, including weekends and holidays

Successful candidates will have the ability to communicate effectively, will be a team player and have a strong customer focus. They must have a proven record of reliability, a positive work ethic and attitude.

About the Role

Napier Port is an industry‑leading pilotage provider, operating 24/7 and managing a diverse mix of Containers, Bulk and Cruise across a port environment that demands technical accuracy and professional judgement. 

We are currently seeking a Pilot to join our high‑performing Marine Team.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver safe and efficient pilotage for vessels of varying size, type, and manoeuvring profile
  • Apply disciplined ship‑handling skills in a very challenging environment
  • Use modern digital tools to plan and execute safe vessel movements
  • Work as part of a tight, professional pilot group known for high standards, teamwork, and reliability
  • Represent Napier Port in interactions with masters, agents, harbour control and operational teams.

What You Bring

To be successful in this role, you will need:

Essential:

  • Current Master Unlimited (Class 1)
  • Leadership capability at Master level or equivalent
  • Current MNZ Medical (Category A or B), or equivalent
  • Legal entitlement to work in New Zealand immediately
  • Pilotage experience preferred 

You will also demonstrate:

  • Strong command presence and excellent communication on the bridge
  • Proven ship‑handling competence and situational awareness under pressure
  • Sharp decision‑making and disciplined execution
  • High personal standards in organisation, time‑keeping and safety leadership
  • A high level of capability in leading and developing personnel across the wider Marine team.

This is not an entry‑level role. It is suited to those who know they can perform and want to operate in an environment where that performance is visible.
