Warren Nicholas – Heavy Plant Operator

Warren Nicholas has worked for Napier Port since 1999. His experience and safety-focused attitude make him a valuable and much-respected member of the Napier Port team.

Throughout his time in the business, Warren has placed special focus on championing health and safety, and protecting the people who work for and within Napier Port.

“I’m a full-time trainer and twin lift container driver, so I understand the importance of doing things right and keeping everyone safe. It’s important to Napier Port, and that’s important to me.”

“I’m also a union delegate and one of the port’s 27 Health and Safety Representatives. I chair the Health and Safety Representatives Committee and I’m on the wider Napier Port Health and Safety Committee.”

Warren has developed a high level of health and safety expertise, but that’s not all he brings to his role. His background includes four years in the road and rail transport industry, where he gained all his heavy plant licences, then 20 years in the meat industry. At Napier Port, he guides and trains a small team of high-performing heavy plant drivers and together they play an important role, handling over 100,000 shipping containers through the port’s empty container depot.

“I love my job, and my team, and working for such a good company. My role can be very busy, and the additional responsibility of being so heavily involved with health and safety certainly gives me the opportunity to wear many hats and keep my job interesting.”

“I’ve been with Napier Port for a long time, and I’ve learned the importance of being able to adapt and bend as the company and the nature of my role change. We’re a close team and I’m proud of what we achieve together. My only regret is I wish I had arrived here a bit earlier in my years.”

Being a part of Napier Port is about being part of a team, and contributing to the success of the business. It’s possible to do that by bringing great skills to your role, progressing within the business, and gaining new skills and experience that can take you further in your career.
