Maritime NZ now main safety regulator for NZ ports
July 23rd, 2024
Mōrena,
On the 1st of July, Maritime New Zealand became the regulator responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with health and safety legislation on ports, as well as on ships. Maritime NZ’s Health & Safety at Work Act (HSWA) designation provides them with the legal mandate and additional resourcing to take a wider view of how port businesses are managing risks, developing systems, performing safety operations.
Maritime NZ’s goal is to support the many businesses on ports that carry out high-risk activities to improve safety culture, embed new health and safety practices, and ultimately reduce harm to the people employed at ports.
Enhancing safety culture with a strong safety focus within the port environment.
Improving practices through engagement and education.
Effective regulation by strengthening Maritime NZ’s role in regulating port safety.
Collaboration with people and organisations on ports.

At the United Nations summit meeting in September 2015, world leaders adopted 17 global goals (and 169 targets) as a set of universal goals that aim to address the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world. These are known as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
