New Port Pass Induction Supports NPT Go-Live: From 3 August 2026

Kia ora,

As we prepare for the Napier Port Transformation (NPT) go-live in late September 2026, we’ll soon be introducing an updated Port Pass Induction to help everyone working at the Port understand the changes taking place across the container terminal and what they mean for you.

Over recent months, many transport operators, contractors and port users have attended information sessions with the Napier Port team to learn more about the new operating environment. The updated induction is another important step in ensuring everyone has the information they need before entering the Port.

What’s Changing
NPT represents the biggest change to container terminal operations in many years. From go-live, there will be a number of important changes to operations in the container terminal, including:

  • A new one-way traffic system and updated vehicle routes throughout the container terminal. The introduction of battery-electric autonomous trucks operating alongside external trucks and other port vehicles and equipment in the container terminal.
  • The introduction of a gate access system at the Western Container Gate.
  • The removal of Loading Zone 1 for the receival and delivery of containers.
  • A dedicated battery swapping station and other infrastructure and operational changes designed to improve safety and efficiency.

Whether you drive, deliver, collect cargo, carry out maintenance or regularly visit the Port, it’s important that you understand how these changes in the container terminal may affect your work.

What You Need To Do
The updated Port Pass induction will be available from 3 August 2026. It has been designed to ensure everyone entering the Port understands the new operating environment, its impact on what you do, and how to work safely within it from day one.

For Existing Port Pass Users

  • Every Port Pass user must complete the new induction before 27 September 2026.
  • If your induction is already current, you’ll still need to complete the updated induction before 27 September.
  • If your induction is due to expire between now and 2 August, it will automatically remain valid until 27 September. This means affected cardholders won’t need to renew before the updated induction becomes available on 3 August.
  • The updated Port Pass induction will be free of charge between 3 August and 27 September.

For New Port Pass Users

  • From Monday 3 August, the updated NPT induction will become the standard Port Pass induction for all new Port Pass users.
  • If you need to induct a new Port user before 3 August, they must complete the current registration process, including card payment, induction, and Port Pass collection.
To maintain ongoing access to Napier Port, these users will also need to complete the updated induction when it becomes available from 3 August.

What Happens If You Don’t Renew Your Port Pass Induction?
If you haven’t completed your Port Pass induction by 27 September, your Port Pass will be suspended and you will no longer be able to access Napier Port.

Please note, the standard $5 administration fee will apply for inductions after 27 September.

We strongly encourage all Port Pass users to complete the updated induction well before 27 September to avoid any interruption to Port access.

Port Pass Support
The Port Pass team will have additional resources available throughout this period to help process inductions and answer any questions.

Further information will be sent directly to Port Pass administrators closer to 3 August, including everything they need to know about the updated induction process.

Thank You
Thank you for your support as we prepare for this significant milestone. By ensuring everyone understands the new operating environment, we’re helping create a safe and successful transition for all Port users.

If you have any questions, please contact the Port Pass team, who will be happy to help.

    Sustainability aligned with global goals:

At the United Nations summit meeting in September 2015, world leaders adopted 17 global goals (and 169 targets) as a set of universal goals that aim to address the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world. These are known as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
