Fisheries Liaison Group

Working with the fishing and diving community to protect fisheries

The Fisheries Liaison Group is a group of commercial and recreational fishers, divers and Napier Port representatives who are working together to ensure robust procedures are in place to manage water quality and fisheries during the planned dredging programme.

The group was established in January 2019 and is one of over 100 conditions that Napier Port is committed to, ensuring we protect the interests of our communities and monitor the impacts of construction and dredging during the project.

Left to right: Reece O’Leary (Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Principal Consents Officer), John Stewart (LegaSea), Michel de Vos (Napier Port General Manager Infrastructure Services), David Scott (Freedom Divers Hawke’s Bay), Eileen von Dadelszen (Independent Chair), Karl Warr (Independent Fisher), Paul Rose (Napier Port Environmental Advisor), Grant Russell (Stantec NZ), Te Kaha Hawaikirangi (Napier Port Pou Tikanga – Infrastructure Environmental & Cultural Advisor), Jim Yeoman (LegaSea) and Rick Birch (Commercial Fisher).

Tasks of the Fisheries Liaison Group

The Fisheries Liaison Group has provided input into the following three management plans that manage dredging and disposal effects and water quality:

These plans are based on the extensive studies that Napier Port has already completed, which are available in our library.

Throughout the planned dredging campaign, we’ll monitor the water quality (turbidity) together in real-time, which you can view on our environmental dashboard.

Minutes of the Fisheries Liaison Group meetings

Led by Independent Chair Eileen von Dadelszen, the group was established in early 2019 and meets quarterly or as otherwise agreed.

Note: Fisheries Liaison Group minutes from previous years are available upon request from Napier Port.
