Port User Advisory: Eastern Gate Closure on Saturday Evening Due to Cyclone Vaianu
April 10th, 2026
Alternate access arrangements via Western Gate
Kia ora,
Napier Port continues to monitor Cyclone Vaianu, with further impacts expected over the weekend. A previous communication (available here) advised that the port will be closed to vessels from approximately late afternoon Saturday through to midday Monday.
Due to forecast significant swell associated with Cyclone Vaianu, Napier Port is also implementing changes to port access over the weekend as an additional safety precaution.
Access Changes to Napier Port
From 5:00pm Saturday 11 April, the Eastern Gate will be closed, with the road at the Breakwater Road entrance physically blocked with a vehicle, and VMS signage in place. At the same time, the Security team will relocate operations to the Western Gate gatehouse.
The Western Gate will remain open for R&D as per normal hours on Saturday, closing at 12pm for the remainder of the weekend.
The Western Gate will then reopen again from 5:00pm Saturday for standard port access (replacing Eastern Gate access). From this point, access will be via Lane 1 only and the normal exit lane. Additional VMS signage will also be in place at the Western Gate to support these changes.
Further Operational Updates
Our team will hold operational meetings each morning over the weekend, with updates provided to port users as required. Wind conditions will continue to be monitored, with a decision to be made on Saturday morning regarding any full port closure if necessary.
Please share this advisory with any colleagues who may be accessing the port over the weekend.
Thank you for your understanding as we prioritise safety during this period.
At the United Nations summit meeting in September 2015, world leaders adopted 17 global goals (and 169 targets) as a set of universal goals that aim to address the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world. These are known as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
