SUSTAINABLE STRATEGY

TE MAHERE TOITŪ

Napier Port is committed to operating our business in a sustainable way

By focusing our efforts on those issues that we are in the best position to influence and improve, we believe we can make a measurable, meaningful and enduring contribution to sustainability. We continue to make good progress in our commitment to sustainability, with a focus on embedding sustainable practices throughout our operations.

Sustainability Strategy

Our Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan implemented in 2021 identifies over 100 measurable workstreams across four pillars of people, planet, prosperity and partnerships stretching across a 10-year implementation timeframe (click on the link to the right).

Aligned to Global Goals

We have chosen to align our sustainability strategy to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Launched in late 2015, the SDG platform is now recognised as an ideal basis upon which to build a robust and balanced Sustainability Strategy.

The World Port Sustainability Program (WPSP) encourages industry-wide action in pursuit of the SDGs. Whilst it is recognised that not every port can do everything across every SDG, we support this industry direction and have ensured our sustainability strategy addresses relevant SDGs for the regional and New Zealand context.

We are focused on what we can achieve locally to respond to global challenges like climate change, environmental issues and prosperity to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

Addressing Climate Change

This year, we published our fifth Climate Change Related Disclosure Report, continuing our commitment to providing stakeholders with a clear understanding of the potential financial implications of climate change on our business.

Our first three reports followed the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). The fourth report marked our first year reporting under the Aotearoa New Zealand Climate Standards (NZ CS), and this year’s fifth report continues that alignment, incorporating updates to Napier Port’s Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA) and disclosures consistent with IFRS S2 – Climate-related Disclosures.

Napier Port’s sustainability journey is one of continuous improvement. Our people remain committed to strengthening our environmental, social and economic performance by identifying and managing risks and finding opportunities to use resources more efficiently. As we gather more information and knowledge, we expect to further develop and enhance our climate change related disclosures and continue delivering on our sustainability strategy.

Climate Change Related Disclosure Report

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

Napier Port measures and reports its Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse-gas emissions each year in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Our emissions have been independently certified by Toitū Envirocare since 2022, providing assurance that our measurement and management processes align with ISO 14064-1:2018 and international best practice.

In 2025, Napier Port’s broader climate-related disclosures – including greenhouse-gas emissions – received independent limited assurance from EY, on behalf of the Office of the Auditor-General.

“Independent limited assurance has been obtained for our greenhouse gas emissions and related disclosures against the Aotearoa New Zealand Climate Standards (NZ CS). The limited assurance report can be found on page 32 of the Climate Change Related Disclosure Report.”

In 2025, total assured emissions were 18,037 tCO₂e, up from 8,740 tCO₂e in 2024. This increase reflects the inclusion of several new Scope 3 categories not previously reported – including purchased goods and services, capital goods, and fuel- and energy-related activities (well-to-tank). Including these additional categories provides a more complete and transparent view of Napier Port’s value-chain emissions.

Environmental Management System (Toitū EMS Gold Accreditation)

Napier Port achieved Toitū Environmental Management System (EMS) Gold accreditation, recognising the strength and maturity of our environmental management framework.

The EMS provides a single, integrated view of all environmental and sustainability initiatives across the business, enabling us to:

  • identify environmental risks more effectively
  • set clear objectives and performance targets
  • prioritise projects based on impact and stakeholder importance
  • drive continuous improvement across operations

This accreditation reflects our commitment to strong environmental governance and to embedding sustainable practices across our business.

About the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

These are known as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as illustrated below. You can learn how the port’s sustainability performance will be guided by this goals in our Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan (click on link above).
