Weather Update: Napier Port closure extended until 1200 midday Thursday 16 February
Kia ora,
Napier Port has extended its port closure until tomorrow 1200 midday – Thursday 16 February, with a further operational assessment scheduled for 0800 in the morning.
Port Update
Initial safety and infrastructure assessments yesterday have revealed minimal damage although storm related debris is inhibiting port access via land, while telecommunications connectivity is limiting operations.
Electricity to power critical infrastructure including refrigerated containers is being supplied by on-port generation facilities.
Lifeline Utility
With Napier currently cut-off from the region due to road and bridge closures, the NZ Army will be setting up a HQ site at Napier Port today to assist with the region’s response.
Port Closure Information
All port sites will now remain closed until 1200 midday tomorrow – Thursday 16 February.
This includes the Eastern Gate, Western Gate, Container Terminal and Thames Street Depots 1 and 2.
Shipping Operations Update
A survey of the port’s shipping channel is scheduled for tomorrow when conditions allow and sea debris has reduced. This survey is required before vessels can safely berth at the port.
Reopening Assessment
Napier Port will be making a further operational assessment tomorrow morning about the reopening times for each site above and will update accordingly.
Thank you for your understanding and stay safe.

Sustainability aligned with global goals:
At the United Nations summit meeting in September 2015, world leaders adopted 17 global goals (and 169 targets) as a set of universal goals that aim to address the urgent environmental, political and economic challenges facing our world. These are known as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
