Marine services

Comprehensive services around the clock

Napier Port welcomes vessels of all sizes, from yachts through to cruise ships the size of Ovation of the Seas. Our team provides a full suite of marine services — seven days a week, 364 days a year.

Napier Port welcomes vessel berthage across our five wharves. We’re able to berth vessels of up to 348 metres in length, and can accomodate a wide range of vessels – from small fishing boats to large container ships and cruise liners.

Napier Port provides pilotage, towing and lines-handling services around the clock, every day of the week.

All vessels over 500 gross registered tonnes or 40 metres length overall require pilotage within the Napier Pilotage Area. Our team of internationally-qualified pilots are experts in navigating vessels through the pilotage area and into and out of the harbour in all conditions.

Napier Pilotage Area comprises all port water between latitudes 39°25’S and 39°29’S, to west of longitude 176°59’E.

You can review the regulations for the Napier Pilotage Area in the Hawke’s Bay Regional Navigation Safety Bylaws.

If you have any enquiries, please contact Napier Port.

Bunkers can only be supplied via road tanker. All bunker operators working within Napier Port are required to have a Hawke’s Bay Regional Council-approved Tier 1 Oil Spill Plan.

Permission for bunkering must be obtained in advance from the Napier Port Duty Safety Advisor.

Napier Port provides a shuttle service for all crew members of commercial cargo vessels, to ensure they can travel safely between their ship and the port gate.

A bus service for cruise tourists and other passengers can be arranged, to transport passengers between the cruise wharf and Napier’s i-Site information centre in the heart of the city. From here, all the attractions of the city are within easy walking distance and buses are available to tourist hotspots further afield. This service must be booked prior to a ship’s arrival in port.

Napier Port offers a full suite of marine equipment for hire to ensure your visit is smooth sailing.

The use of our tugs, pilot launch, and mooring services are included in Napier Port’s standard marine service charge. Tugs and the pilot launch are also available for hire by special arrangement.

A range of gangways and security fencing is available for hire to suit your requirements.

For more details, see the Marine Charges section of our Customer Portal.

Napier Port provides a range of optional services including replenishing potable water, managing waste, and additional telephone hire.

Future-proofing for larger ships

We’re focused on future-proofing Napier Port’s capacity to meet local and global needs.

With ships becoming  both longer and wider, we’re planning for the future by designing and developing a sixth wharf. At 350 metres long, the new wharf is designed to handle the larger vessels that are expected to call in the future, and at the same time increase total berthage capacity across the port.

Our aim is to provide the infrastructure to continue to accommodate global shipping, and to meet any increase in cargo coming out of our region. You can find out more about our plans here.

Our Commitment to Marine Safety and Quality

Napier Port’s Marine Services Safety Management System is fully compliant to the New Zealand Port & Harbour Safety Code (PHSC) and we actively contribute to the continuous improvement of the Code. Our Marine Quality Management System is also fully accredited under ISO 9001:2015.
