The Herenga Waka Festival ran from 12 – 26 February 2017 and saw six waka hourua (voyaging waka) from around New Zealand converge on Napier for a fortnight of friendly competition, education and relationship building.
A small team of Napier Port staff attended the powhiri at Matahiwi Marae to welcome crews to the Herenga Waka Festival. Napier Port is a proud supporter of the festival hosts, Te Matau a Māui Voyaging Trust, and is a sponsor of the festival.
The waka races were spirited, and a great chance for crews to showcase their skill. Teams also ran ticketed tours and attended workshops.
Te Matau a Māui Voyaging Trust cares for Te Matau a Māui, a waka hourua that is permanently berthed in the Ahuriri Harbour, just around from the port. Napier Port’s partnership with the Trust recognises the significant cultural history of the area surrounding the port. Read more about this partnership here.
